Woodlands Lookout | Nesting Bird Mug – Studio Originals

At the top of the handle, a tiny bird keeps watch.

Below, tucked safely at the base, a little nest full of eggs waits for her return.

This wheel-thrown stoneware mug tells a quiet story of patience and protection - the kind you only notice when you slow down enough to look. A tiny hand-sculpted bird perches at the very top of the handle, standing sentinel. Peer down to the base and you'll find her nest, hand-sculpted with a clutch of eggs nestled inside. She hasn't gone far.

The body of the mug has been hand-carved to resemble tree bark - tactile, textured, and grounding to hold. Turn it over and you'll find circular rings on the underside, like the cross-section of an old woodland tree. The exterior is left unglazed, so the raw grey Scandi stoneware clay does exactly what it should - feel like bark.

Inside and around the rim, a drippy blue, cream, and green glaze pools and flows like light through a forest canopy. The contrast between the rich glazed interior and the raw carved exterior makes this mug feel like it was made in the woods.

Woodlands Lookout is part of the Studio Originals collection. These are one-of-a-kind pieces made entirely by hand in my East Sussex garden studio, so no two pieces are ever the same.
